IotaBot is an AI assistant for customer support. It answers from your content – your documents, your pages, your policies – rather than guessing, and escalates to a live agent when someone asks for a person.
This plugin connects your WordPress site to your IotaBot account. Paste your widget key and the chat widget is live.
One assistant, every channel
The widget on your site is only one of the places IotaBot answers. The same knowledge base, the same tools and the same inbox also cover:
- WhatsApp Business. Connect a number through Meta’s Embedded Signup – no developer setup – and the same AI answers chats, with tappable reply buttons and list menus, plus approved templates for messaging outside WhatsApp’s 24-hour window.
- Instagram. DMs run through the same pipeline, and per-post rules auto-reply to comments with exact-phrase, AI-context or always-reply matching.
- Email. Forward your support inbox in; replies go out from your own verified domain, not a generic relay address.
A question asked in an Instagram comment and a question asked on your pricing page reach the same assistant, grounded in the same content, and escalate into the same ticket queue.
What you get
- Grounded answers. Upload documents or crawl your own URLs; replies come from your content, not invented.
- Real actions. IotaBot can call your APIs mid-conversation to track an order or check an account.
- Human handoff. A live agent takes over in real time, with the full conversation history intact.
- Ticketing. Conversations become tickets with statuses, priorities and SLA timers.
- Outbound campaigns. Turn captured contacts into WhatsApp, email or Instagram campaigns, with replies landing in the same inbox.
Built for developers
Pin the key per environment in wp-config.php so staging and production never share one:
define( 'IOTABOT_WIDGET_KEY', 'your-key-here' );
When that constant is set the settings field is read-only.
Two filters are available:
iotabot_widget_key– change the key at runtimeiotabot_should_load– return false to skip the widget on specific pages, for logged-in users, on checkout, and so on
There is also an option to hide the floating bubble and open the chat from your own button or menu link by calling IotaBot("open").
External services
This plugin connects your site to IotaBot, a third-party service operated by IotaBot, in order to provide the chat widget. It is required for the plugin to function.
What is sent, and when:
- On every page view where the widget is enabled, your visitor’s browser loads the widget script from
https://cdn.iotabot.comand communicates withhttps://api.iotabot.com. This transmits your widget key, the page address, and the content of any chat the visitor starts – including anything they type and any details they submit in a chat form. - From your WordPress admin only, when you open the plugin’s settings page, your widget key and this site’s address are sent to
https://api.iotabot.comso the page can tell you whether the key is valid and whether the domain is allowed. Nothing is sent before you save a key.
No data is sent to IotaBot at all until you have entered a widget key.
Service provided by IotaBot:
- Website: https://iotabot.com
- Terms of service: https://iotabot.com/policies/terms
- Privacy policy: https://iotabot.com/policies/privacy
Privacy
Chat conversations are stored in your IotaBot account, and you control retention and deletion there. If you collect personal data through chat forms, your own privacy policy should cover it. IotaBot provides a GDPR consent field type for use in those forms.
སྒྲིག་འཇུག
- Install and activate the plugin.
- Click IotaBot in the left-hand admin menu.
- Follow the four steps on that page – create your free IotaBot account, add this website in your IotaBot dashboard using the exact domain shown, copy your widget key from the Embed tab, and paste it in.
- Save. The widget appears on your site straight away.
Nothing is loaded for your visitors until a widget key is saved.
Important: in IotaBot, the website’s domain must match this site’s address. The settings page shows you the exact value to use, and warns you if it does not match.
FAQ
-
Do I need an IotaBot account?
-
Yes. The plugin connects WordPress to IotaBot; the assistant, your knowledge base and your conversations live there. You can create a free account from the settings page.
-
Where do I find my widget key?
-
In IotaBot: Websites your site Embed tab Widget Key. The settings page links straight to it.
-
The widget is not appearing. Why?
-
Almost always because the domain on your website in IotaBot does not match this site’s address – for example
example.comsaved when your site actually serveswww.example.com. Open IotaBot in the admin menu; if that is the problem, the status at the top of the page will say so and show you the exact domain to add. -
Does it work on WordPress Multisite?
-
Yes. Each site in the network keeps its own widget key, so each can have its own assistant and its own knowledge base. Add each site separately in IotaBot.
-
Can I stop the widget loading on certain pages?
-
Yes, with the
iotabot_should_loadfilter. For example, to hide it on checkout:add_filter( 'iotabot_should_load', function ( $load ) { return is_checkout() ? false : $load; } ); -
Does this plugin add WhatsApp and Instagram to my site?
-
Not to your WordPress site directly – those channels are connected inside your IotaBot dashboard, not here. This plugin puts the chat widget on your site. Once you connect a WhatsApp number or an Instagram account in IotaBot, the same assistant answers there too, using the same knowledge base, and every conversation lands in one inbox.
-
Does it slow my site down?
-
The widget script is loaded asynchronously, so it never blocks your page from rendering.

དག་བཅོས་ཉིན་ཐོ།
1.1.0
- WooCommerce: the assistant can now answer “where is my order?” and search your catalogue.
- Order lookup is limited to the customer signed in to your store. A signed-out visitor cannot reach it, and there is no lookup by email or order number, so orders cannot be read by guessing.
- The signed-in customer’s identity is signed in PHP with your store secret, so it cannot be forged from the browser.
- Adds a Store secret setting, and two read-only endpoints under /wp-json/iotabot/v1/ that are registered only once that secret is set.
- IotaBot never holds WooCommerce API keys: the plugin serves only what a given customer is entitled to.
1.0.1
- Admin page styles are now enqueued with wp_add_inline_style instead of being printed in the page.
- The widget script tag is now built with wp_script_add_data and the wp_script_attributes filter on WordPress 6.3 and later.
- Fixed: the “hide the chat bubble” setting had no effect, because the attribute was written without its value.
1.0.0
- Initial release.
